Monthly Expenses – April 2016

With some serious delay, here it is... my expense report of April 2016. It is almost time for the May one!

Back in January, I started this monthly expense series to show that it is possible to live a comfortable, exciting and relatively adventurous life without being rich. Or even without owning/earning a lot of money. That being said, Mark and I seem to manage one big expense a month for some reason, whether it is car, plane or computer related. Luckily, we live totally rent-free and still "in style", wherever we end up. 🙂

Here is an overview of our expenses in April, a higher than average month because of my plane ticket to Belgium.

  1. As usual, a good frugal month. That’s seems like a pretty decent price for your airfare.

    • Yes. The airfare was not too bad, I agree. Our goal is to stay under $1000 a month for the two of us. On the boat, this seemed more feasible, on months without expensive boat parts or haulouts anyway. 🙂 I think we are seduced by the diversity and organic produce in grocery stores!

  2. If I had to come up with our budget these days, it would be quite scary. Lots of repairs (engine, fridge, radar) and a ‘waterproof’ camera that wasn’t.

    • Ouch about the camera, Lisa. So sorry to hear this. I hope you manage to return it under warranty. Always hard from a moving boat! Maybe from Darwin?? The money leaves the pockets very quickly when boat repairs are due. But, whenever they are not and you are sailing in the middle of the ocean, it is time to catch up.

      • Sadly the case was way past warranty. We’ve been shooting with it for 3 years. I have ordered a new G5X Canon that is supposed to be here Friday. The good bes is that the radar started to work again so we don’t need a new one of those. The engine repair man gave The Captains fixes a thumbs up so the cost of repairs was his time and a few spare parts. And we think we are going to wait further freezer repairs until Malaysia where it is cheaper. We’ll survive with out external through Indonesia.

        • I guess the worst part is that you have to stock-up on less groceries. (Or is that a good thing? :-)) But, food – like everything else – is cheaper in Asia as well. Good idea to wait until Malaysia. Friends of ours were hauled out there for a while and got a lot of repairs done as well. But I believe they wrote that Thailand is cheaper to buy (and import) parts.
