  1. We have this great relationship: she plants, waits. I do the weeding in the meantime, trying to remember what the plants are SUPPOSED to look like, so I don’t rip them out, too. She trusts me (silly girl!)

    • Haha! This sounds very similar to our situation. I had no idea that after the planting, there was actually work involved. 🙂 I have been seen watering the young plants, but he is pulling the weeds. What we removed on the patch of dirt before planting, we have no idea. I hope no flowers or previously planted vegetables by the owner of the house. 🙂

Better to try than not to!

  3. Think of the Brownie points you will score when the owners come back, if it’s a success! 🙂

    • That’s a good point, Jo! They were pretty encouraging with their “feel free to plant a vegetable garden” suggestion before they left. 🙂

  4. I will leave that to you. Black thumb here. ?

    • We are trying to turn our black thumbs into green ones (temporarily). So far, so good! Nothing is impossible, right, Mlissabeth? 🙂

  5. This is one of the the things I really miss about not having a land based home. I used to love gardening and growing our own vegies. It was so relaxing puttering around in the garden and watching the plants grow.

    • It is, surprisingly, pretty enjoyable to water the plants and check up on them every day. They are like extra little pets to take care of. On the boat, we grew basil, mint and spinach pretty easily. It is possible to grow a little garden on the boat, when you have the space for it. On our cat, we had a little box we would put in the cockpit – on the helm seat step when at anchor and under the table while underway. Our friends on monohulls would turn the top of their companionway into a garden.

  6. Keep going it will reward your hard work!

  7. Liesbet it looks like you are having great success! Yes the kitchen scissors likely not quite the right tool but whatever works. Is that basil that you have growing so well? I have a terrible time getting basil to grow here for some odd reason.

    • Yes, it is basil, Sue, but we bought plants, not seeds. They are doing extremely well outside. The one I put inside, died. We are eating a bit of that and of the lettuce now. On our boat, we managed to grow basil as well. Not sure why yours is not doing well. The right amount of water and sun (and fertile ground) should do the trick. Listen to me, the expert! 🙂
