A Life Less Ordinary

Then and Now – Fall

Now that Mark and I have been house and pet sitting throughout the US for over a year, we often think back about then, when we were still full-time cruisers on Irie. I am hoping to post a few photos about the difference in lifestyle, views and perspective the coming months. For this one, I was inspired by Terri’s blog link-up Seasonal Sensations – Autumn Leaves.

Autumn in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (2009)

Autumn in Venezuela (2011)

Autumn in New England (2015)

Autumn in Northern California (2016)

Are the leaves turning where you are? What has been your most memorable fall?

  1. Then and now . . . what a great idea! And as much as I love fall (the colours, the smells, the crispness in the air), life ‘then’ looks pretty good right about now (we had frost on the docks this morning). Have a great weekend!

    • I hear you… About “then”, not the frost! After being back on land for about 16 months, we finally start missing the boat life. Not that the comforts of a house start wearing off, but more for the peace and beauty around us. The fall colors are better on land, though. Ideally for just a visit, like we sometimes did over those eight boat years. 🙂 Enjoy your weekend as well. Lots of rain here, so a relaxing one indoors.

  2. Autumn / Fall in New Englamd looks just perfect to me!

  3. Great photos and such vivid contrasts! Which autumn was your absolute favorite?
    Donna

    • Tough question, but I would have to go with one of the tropical ones we had. When our dogs were still alive… (Sorry, Donna.)

  4. I vote for the colors of New England and the warmth of Venezuela! We don’t get a lot of fall colors around here.

    • Yeah, the colors are definitely better in New England (no wonder it is famous for that as well). Thing is… cooler weather and changing leaves go together, so unfortunately, there is no place in the world with a colorful autumn and 80 degree temperatures. 🙁

  5. You’ve certainly been to some very interesting and varied places on your travels. For me, fall is gorgeous anywhere there is a bit of sunshine and a few deciduous trees!

    • You’re living in the right place, Denzil. My mom loves the four seasons as well, especially fall. When we were on the boat (and even now), she sends me photos every October of the leaves changing color in their yard in Oost-Vlaanderen. 🙂

  6. I love the differences between autumn in New England and Venezuela and how you’re dressed 🙂 It might have been cold in New England, but playing the the autumn leaves was probably worth having to be all bundled up.

    • You are right, Ellen. That was our first colorful autumn in a decade and I was very excited to play with the leaves and with the dog we were watching as well. I took hundreds of photos of the fall, as if it was my first experience with the burst of colors. Now, after another year, I’m over it. But, maybe that’s because the colors are not as spectacular here in California. Or, because I am getting cold… 🙂

  7. I would have to say this one, though not always for the best reasons, Liesbet. 🙂

    • I forgot that the word “memorable” also could have negative connotations, Jo. I hope you can make some wonderful memories with the trees this fall as well. Sending you love!

  8. I’ve had my share of Autumn delight too, Liesbet. Thanks for being kind. 🙂 And I love the sand dollar. I always wondered what one of those was.

    • 🙂 Sand dollars are beautiful, but very fragile, so hard to take “home” or offer as gifts to family… Have an enjoyable weekend, Jo.

  9. Thank you for the reminder about the sand dollars, though it is tempting to take them home. Every autumn becomes memorable in its own way as we see how the season treats a different part of the world.

    • I have managed to “save” a few sand dollars from destruction, but it is tough. Even when you snorkel in an area where dozens are half buried on the ocean floor, most of them are already broken by the gentle movements of the water and the sand. I love how you describe autumn! 🙂

  10. The fall colors are beautiful! I think a touch of fall, seeing colors, getting a little cooler, and then escaping before too much snow and darkness is the way to go. I do like the change in seasons, but have recently decided that I’m just not a cold weather person!

    • Yes! Well summed up, Lucy. I totally agree, with maybe one slight adaptation: living in the tropics and visit for a few weeks over autumn, before returning back to the warmth. It is the perfect way to appreciate the colors and the cooler weather. 🙂

  11. What an eye popping collection of beauty Liesbet! oh my I don’t know which is my top pick but I am a sucker for white sand and blue water. The leaves in our part of Canada are long gone. At least a month I would say. Perhaps a memorable fall for us was this past year in Australia. Spring for us and fall for them!

    • That’s the way to enjoy several falls a year, Sue! 🙂 We did that in New Zealand last year and did not expect it to be as cold as it was. I don’t think we would do it again. We truly are suckers for warm weather, especially when paying a lot of money to get to places. I hear Bali has quite a few white beaches with blue water…
